Brazil is a country overflowing with music. It plays a vital role in the lives of ordinary Brazilians and can be heard playing in every corner of the country.Brazilian music represents a vibrant mix of different cultures, largely because of its complex history. While indigenous music from the original inhabitants of the area is present in modern form, itis mixed with foreign influences, namely from Portuguese colonizers and their African slaves who landed on Brazilian shores in the 19th century.
As a vast country of many states, Brazil's music is regional, with each section contributing distinct musical genres. Portuguese song forms such as fado are prevalent in Brazilian music, and Portuguese influences can be found in the mournful and poetic lyrics, the exquisite melodies, and the use of accordions, guitars, and violins. While Portugal has contributed greatly to the culture and of course the language, Brazil also witnessed the arrival of settlers from Germany, Italy, and many other countries, including Lebanon and Japan.
The African influences include energetic drumming and dancing forms. These are largely expressed through communal traditions like circle dances, with people gathering to make music together. This potent music also drives the energy in martial art forms such as capoeira. As in Cuba and Haiti, Brazilian Africans were able to retain a great majority of their music, dance, and spiritual traditions. These traditions, combined with other elements, have resulted in some of the most vibrant and celebrated music in Brazil. This music was often accompanied by dance elements that were viewed as indecent back then because of the close contact between dancers.
Nevertheless, both music and dance became increasingly popular and were eventually embraced by the public. Centuries later, Brazil would again "shock" the world with dance forms such as samba.

Human attention is often described as if it were simply shrinking, but the issue is far more complex. In a digital environment saturated with alerts, messages, and fast-moving streams of information, people are repeatedly drawn away from their immediate tasks, (21) ______ . Instead of entering a state of sustained concentration, the brain is forced to reconstruct the previous mental context each time. (22) ______ depends not only on personal discipline but also on how carefully the learning environment is structured.
This does not mean that deep concentration has become unattainable. (23) ______ . When students read a dense text or work on a cognitively demanding assignment, even a brief glance at a notification can disrupt the flow of thought and make it harder to regain the same level of focus.
Experts therefore recommend establishing deliberate routines that reduce unnecessary interruptions rather than relying on willpower alone. (24) ______ . Such strategies are most effective (25) ______ .

Rather, it suggests that attention must be intentionally protected from repeated disruption.
In contrast, students should train themselves to respond to digital input immediately.
For instance, frequent alerts make extended reading less necessary in academic contexts.
As a result, concentration is no longer a relevant skill in modern learning.
(24)
A sustainable routine may involve disabling non-essential alerts, allocating a realistic period for demanding work, and taking brief recovery breaks.
A sustainable routine may involve checking urgent messages first, keeping social media open, and returning to schoolwork whenever possible.
A sustainable routine may involve removing all devices permanently, studying for several hours without rest, and avoiding communication altogether.
A sustainable routine may involve switching rapidly between tasks, processing multiple sources at once, and increasing exposure to online input.

when they are practised consistently rather than treated as emergency measures

A little spontaneity can be a good thing, can’t it? We all act on impulse from time to time, but did you know that impulsivity can be a common symptom of many different mental health conditions? Acting without thinking – for example, buying things on a whim, or blurting something out before you think it through – doesn’t just happen in a moment of ‘weakness’ or carelessness; it can be a symptom all on its own.
“Impulsivity is a surprisingly common symptom. It can often show up as a symptom within broader mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, or even during intense anxiety or trauma responses,” explains UK Council for Psychotherapy accredited therapist Tina Chummun. “It’s not just about making rash decisions; it can be your nervous system responding rapidly without your brain’s slower, logical processing getting a look-in.” Other conditions that can be linked with more impulsive behaviours include those with substance use disorders, people who have experienced a brain injury, or neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, people with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), or impulse control disorders like trichotillomania or kleptomania.
[I]. Those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may act more impulsively, make hasty decisions, or engage in what can be seen as risky behaviour. [II]. Those who are impulsive might face judgement from others, sometimes being described as ‘unstable’, ‘unpredictable’, ‘rash’, or ‘hot-headed’. [III]. This impulsivity can lead to a sense of instability, which can cause people to feel like they aren’t good enough. [IV]. In turn, this can result in struggling with unstable emotions, behaviours, or relationships. You might be less likely to consider the consequences of your behaviours, meaning you may develop unhealthy ways of coping with how you’re feeling.
It’s important to remember that impulsive behaviour alone isn’t a diagnosis, and doesn’t mean that you might be experiencing a mental health condition. But it’s worth keeping in mind that if repeated impulsive behaviour starts to interfere and have a negative impact on your life for an extended period of time, it could be a sign to seek help.
While the exact causes aren’t fully understood, it’s believed that a number of different factors can contribute to impulsivity, including those that are environmental, genetic, and psychological. As well as being a symptom of some mental illnesses, impulsivity can stem from traumatic experiences, particularly during childhood when we develop our self-regulation skills.
